The cystic fibrosis prognosis used to be a very severe diagnosis that would often take the life of an infant within a few years. As you can see below, there have been a number of discoveries and advancements in the treatment of cystic fibrosis throughout recent history which have improved the quality of life and prognosis for those with cystic fibrosis.
- CF Foundation becomes incorporated as the National CF Research Foundation 1955
- Pancreatic enzymes
- Airway clearance techniques (ACTs)
- Anti-staphylococcal antibiotics
- Anti-pseudomonal antibiotics
- Lung transplants 1988
- Discover CFTR 1989
- DNase (pulmozyme) 1993
- Inhaled tobramycin 1997
- Cayston 2010
The improvement of medicines to treat the symptoms of cystic fibrosis have continued to improve the prognosis of people with CF. Recent discoveries in certain mutations of the gene that produces the CFTR protein have led to more research on treating the underlying cause, which is incredibly promising for patients with cystic fibrosis. Increased Life Expectancy
The life expectancy of people with cystic fibrosis has risen dramatically in recent years with the advancements in treatment technology and medicine. As you can see below, the median age of survival has increased from 5 yearsto 50+ years in some places. That’s over 10x the median age of survival since 1955 and the prognosis is continuing to improve.
- 1955 median age of survival 5 years
- 1962 median age of survival 10
- 1969 median age of survival 14 years
- 1985 median age of survival 25 years
- 2006 median age of survival 37 years
- 2013 median age of survival 41 years
- The median age of survival continues to rise with advancements in technology
Cystic Fibrosis Medication
Cystic fibrosis treatment and medication have improved drastically in recent years. Current treatment includes:
- Enzyme and vitamin supplements to aid in digestion and absorption of nutrients
- A number of inhaled antibiotics and mucolytics to treat opportunistic lung infections and help clear mucus from the airways
- Airway Clearance Techniques (ACTs) – to promote healthy lung function inconjunction with medications
- Treatment can even go as far as lung transplants in more serious cases

Cystic Fibrosis Diet
There are many things that need to be considered in regard to diet with cystic fibrosis. But the three key factors to leading a healthier life and achieving the best prognosis are:
- Vitamin/Enzyme Supplementation
- Caloric Intake
Cystic fibrosis blocks digestive enzymes from entering the digestive tract. This makes it essential to supplement the diet with pancreatic enzymes. Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, & K) are also important because it is more difficult to absorb these nutrients with cystic fibrosis. This lack of absorption also requires that more calories are consumed, especially calories from fats. One of the key components to staying healthy throughout exercise is keeping hydrated. Cystic fibrosis lead to more salt being sweat out during exercise. It is essential to stay hydrated and supplement electrolytes.
